Last American Heroes: Today's Firefighters
Published in Paperback by Pocket Books (August, 1994)
Authors: Charles W. Sasser and Michael W. Sasser
Average review score:

Great look at the duties of fire/rescue workers
Even before I read "America's Last Heroes", I had a great deal of respect for those who've made it their profession and duty to risk their own lives and personal safety for the lives and safety of others. I place them far above any pro athlete, actor, or politician on the heroism scale. I don't envy their job, however... it's not the kind of career just anyone can tackle.

The book covers a month in the life of a Miami Beach Fire Dept. firehouse, during the Christmas holidays. Told within this novel are the many strange, tragic, and disturbing trials that firefighters and rescue workers face on a daily basis. There's the fire inspector's assessment of an arson scene, complete with 'crispy critters'-the firefighter term for human fatalities that burned in the blaze. There's the aftermath of a bedroom blaze involving a teenager's sexual experimentations. Also recounted is the disturbing scene where a rescue team discovers an elderly couple literally rotting away and being eaten alive- by maggots. These and many other moments are pretty good displays of the sterner stuff that these folks are made of to handle such situations with the utmost professionalism.

There's also the other side stories, like the Miami Beach FD's first woman firefighter breaking into a male-dominated domain, and learning to adjust and adapt, as well as earn the respect of her comrades. Recalled is the firehouse 'groupie', who unfortunately turns out not to be the trusted friend everybody thought he was.

But there's more than just the bad moments and challenges-- there's also the upside. The canned food drives for the homeless, the discovery of a victim of smoke inhalation who wasn't quite as dead as everyone thought he was, and other highlights help keep things in balance.

I know I'd never take on this line of work... but I am glad to see that there are those that do. And after reading "America's Last Heroes", even if I never have to be saved from a fire or ruyshed to the hospital, these true heroes will always have my respect and gratitude. Thanks guys.

Loving Women: A Novel of the Fifties
Published in Hardcover by Random House (March, 1989)
Author: Pete Hamill
Average review score:

Deserves to be reprinted
I found this book in a used book shop, and being a fan of Hamill's, I bought it. Somewhat semi-autobiographical, the book follows a Brooklyn youth into his induction into the Navy and life at its most raw. The story thrusts one suprise twist on top of another, one exciting episode is immediately replaced by one even more thrilling. And this may be the most erotic book I have ever read. Not quite pornographic, the scenes of lust between two lovers are very descriptive and will stick with the reader for some time. I have read thousands of books, and this has to be in my top ten. Look for it, the search will be highly rewarding.

Miami Heat/Pasion en Miami
From the moment I picked up this book I was hooked! Miri is a strong independent woman making it in the male dominated field of construction. My kind of gal. Peter is a handsome and charming hero who seems totally irresistible. When they meet the sparks fly. But how can they continue a romance when their careers keep them tied to different states? From the very beginning readers will root for this couple to stay together. The scenes with Miri's family are excellent and funny. They reminded me of my own family gatherings. The secondary character of Curtis also adds both great tension and comic relief. And for fans of romance the ending is perfect! I highly recommend this book and can't wait for this author's next one.

Miami Hot & Cool: That Magical Rookie Seas

A Cool Book For A Hot Place
I purchased this book when in graduate school in Chicago, Ill. Along with Caribbean Style, which is by another publisher and still in print, this book offers beautiful color photos of the real Miami "style". If you are looking for the tropical look this book is an excellent reference as well as the variety of architectural styles prevelant in Miami. It is also a nice reminder of the residential lifestyle of Miami not often seen by the tourist. Along with Caribbean Style, this book ranks high on my list as a book I keep pulling off my book shelf.

Publisher's Weekly raves
from Publisher's Weekly Review, dated May 23, 1980
This is a significant, thoroughly enjoyable novel about three concurrent generations of Willigs, a Jewish family that settles in Florida ... in 1919. The story unravels through the voice of George Sloate, a young man from Ohio who throws himself into the chaos of the Miami land boom of 1925 ... Many pipe dreams are conceived and crushed, many fortunes made and squandered, as George Sloate relates the events of 35 years. This extremely capable, likable narrator finds it impossible to keep his distance from the vulnerable, very real Willigs. The reader will have the same experience.
